Technical Difficulties

This computerized age has a lot to offer. It also occasionally hands me a technical situation that I can’t call upon the expert assistance of the S4 team. Which is how I ended up recently spending two days – along with some lost skin and a few injudicious threats that probably weren’t appropriate directed toward inanimate objects – re-cabling my personal computer setup. Whee! (or please use whatever exclamation or sounds you prefer).

Power gets a little flaky out in the boondocks, especially with the extra-curricular activities of the Mama Nature and the weather recently. After the last outage, I realized my network storage wasn’t correctly linked up to my backup UPS. Unfortunately I realized it after the power dropped. Fortunately it’s (apparently) a robust set of hardware. Sounded horrible as it recovered, though. Thus, the re-cabling of power cords to machines.

Somewhere out there, Hephaestus and Daedalus are having drinks and falling out of their chairs in amusement.

Of course, nothing is that straightforward; re-cabling means reorganizing which means rearranging. I’m too old for much of that particular excitement. I get set in my ways, especially the organization of the spaces where I think and write.  It’s very useful to know where everything is when the power goes out and I can’t see my hand in front of my face (well, close anyway). It also prevents some of those inappropriate threatening remarks.

However, maybe change will help move the second book along. Yes, honest, I’m working on it.

I hate exams

I’ll throw out another update (Keeping Score Part 3, if you’re… keeping score) in the next three or four days. It depends on how much Mama Nature wants to remind me this week that she is most definitely in charge. I’ll most likely get a game-time test of my upgraded power and recovery cabling (& network setup and did I mention the monitoring software installs?) and all the other incidentals that let me keep writing.

Wish me luck. I’ll take all the help I can get!

I'm on my 5th or 6th career depending on how you count them, but ideally this one will be my last with the kind help of our readers. I've traveled to several states across the U.S., but the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina will always be where I'm most comfortable. I've been an avid reader of comics for more years than I'm going to mention, but I return time after time to the old pulps. Obviously the Doc Savage books have been a tremendous influence. There's just something about seeing and hearing those characters in your mind's eye, just the way YOU, as the reader, think they should be.. I've been writing poems, lyrics and stories of varying quality since I was in my teens, which means most of my archives are on paper in three-ring binders! I've been creating characters in various RPG systems for at least that long. I've always thought characters made the story: good characters can live on through story after story. It wasn't until the last 6 or 7 years that I felt I could write characters well enough to be engaging. You'll have to let me know how I'm doing.
